We were very lucky today, to be able to have a look at some authentic African artefacts. We looked at masks and a storyboard from the Sepik River tribe, the children really enjoyed the story that accompanied these. We also had a look at some African pottery, made with local materials. We liked the patterns and detail on these.
March 8th - Year 1 Science
This week the children have been creating parachutes and learning all about setting up a fair test.
Throughout this half term our Year 2s are studying 'Living things and their habitats'. This week we explored the school pond, looking for any inhabitants and studying the environment. Next week we will be investigating microhabitats and will be on the hunt for mini beasts. The children are really enjoying this topic and becoming our expert explorers!
Our Year 1s are really excited about our 'Awe and Wonder' sessions. Each week they are carrying out different investigations and experiments. In week 1 they created their own telephones using plastic cups and string, this week they have experimented with different liquids to see how water is absorbed. These will continue until Easter, developing their scientific thinking and vocabulary.
World Book Day 2017
The children have really got into the spirit of World Book Day, their costumes were all amazing and they enjoyed many fun activities throughout the day. We shared our love of reading through our reading buddies session. The children wrote book reviews for their favourite books and drew character selfies. They created their own character puppets and worked in groups to create and show their own performances.
The children really enjoyed making pancakes today. They used their knowledge of measurements and doubling to help them to weigh their ingredients. They read and followed the instructions independently, ready to write their own instructions later in the week.
Spring 1: RE
Over this half term we have been looking at Hinduism and have focused on some of their celebrations. We looked at Diwali and retold the story of Rama and Sita. We have also looked closely at Holi, we have discussed the coming of spring and new beginnings. The children took part in a mini festival - our very own festival of colours. We burned the bad things we would like to forget and celebrated our new beginnings by throwing the coloured paints and water. We chose our own songs to sing and the children loved the bright colours that we made.
Georgia even shared with us an outfit that she wore to a Hindu celebration recently with her family. The bright colours and beautiful patterns fit perfectly with our celebrations.
Spring 1: Science
In science this half term our topic has been Animals Including Humans. We have enjoyed studying our bodies, looking at how we grow and how animals grow and change. We have been grouping animals and looking at their features. We have also looked closely at healthy living, including the different food groups, exercise and what our bodies need to stay healthy. Within this we have discussed the basic survival needs of animals including humans. We had a challenge set this week, to create an environment that could provide the basic needs of a rabbit. We had great fun out in our outside environment collecting natural resources that we could use and then putting them together in our groups.
Spring 1: Music
This half term we have been very lucky to have drumming sessions provided. We have linked this to our 'Once upon a time' theme. We have learned the different sounds that we can make, practised rhythms and beats and used our voices to help us. We have also practised different volumes, pitches and rhymes with our voices. This has been great fun!
